Colts lost their Cup game against an older and larger Morpeth side. Match report thanks to John Dean-Laws.
Northern U17s were always up against it in this match.Morpeth colts all starting U18s!!! Northern's traditional slow start was again on show and at half time we were 18-0 down. Three forced changes and some poor tackling let Morpeth in for some more weak tries. Northern battled on till the end against older counter-parts who were both bigger and stronger. We were rewarded near the end with a deserved try by Kieran Laws under the posts from close range. Final score 53-7. The lads didn't play well but were beaten by a very good, older side.
Colts won away 5 - 17 to Egremont. The lads are now top of the U17 league. Match report thanks to Chris Parry-Jones.
Northern U17s travelled to Egremont with a squad of 17. After nearly a 3 hour journey to get to our host's ground Northern started slowly leaving their ‘A’ game on the bus and making some unforced errors. With Egremont trying to play expansive rugby our great defensive work kept them at bay while the lads tried to wake up! Midway through the first half some good passing through the hands enabled Josh Vince Urwin to touchdown in the corner. Conversion missed 5 – 0 at halftime.
Early in the second half good play by the hosts gave them numbers over in the backs and they went over in the corner, conversion missed 5 - 5. Now the lads had to show some grit and determination and picked up their game. The hosts started to make handling errors and some great tackling, tactical kicking and total domination in the scrum gave Jake Macdonald the chance to crash over under the posts and Joshto convert. Northern continued to soak up the pressure from a good side and start winning good lineout ball. Two injuries meant down to bare 15, but both subs gave it their all their all. 12 minutes from time a great break and chip down the touchline by Josh was followed up by the flying scrum half Kane Appleby-Rutter charging over in the corner to the delight of his team mates. Final score 17 – 5. Great hosts but importantly a great win and fantastic team spirit shown. MOTM Josh Vince Urwin.
Colts just lost 15 - 16 at home in a top-of-the-table clash against Darlington Mowden Park. Match report thanks to John Dean-Laws.
Northern, feeling half term and injuries, had only 17 players available (DMP had 23). DMP scored first after 10 minutes. In a tight game both sides scored penalties and at half time the score was 3 - 8.
Northern scored early into second half with Jake Mc going in out wide to make the score 8-8. Northern traded blow for blow with DMP and scored a breakaway try under the posts by Dan Scott to give a 15 - 8 lead. DMP closed the lead with a penalty and Northern defended to the death and were unfortunate not to score when play was stopped for attention to an injured DMP player. With the last play Northern pressed on the DMP line but got a poor call by the referee allowing DMP to kick for touch and press on and score a very late try. This was a crushing blow which every lad felt. There is still a lot more to come from a cracking set of young men. Future looks very bright.
Colts won 36 - 0 at Hartlepool Rovers. Match report thanks to John Dean-Laws.
Northern U17s travelled to Hartlepool Rovers with a squad of 21. Conditions were to play a key factor, freezing cold and a blowing gale to play against and to have behind. Northern started into the wind and a hard task it proved. All play was in the Hartlepool half for the first 15 minutes but clearance kicks repeatedly put us back in our 22. Kieran Laws made the breakthrough crashing over from 5 metres out and wasn't being stopped. Josh Vince Urwin scored soon after with a well worked try out wide. Josh made the first conversion and at half time Northern were 0-12 up.
With 6 changes to the team and with the wind Northern pressed the rest of the game in the game in Hartlepool 22. Jake Mc crashed over from 5 out after good forward play. An interception try by Jordan Symonds was next, followed 5 minutes later by a good finish by Tom Crosse at 13. The last score by team captain and man of the match Nick White followed a great passage of play with an inside ball off 10 at close quarters.
Colts won 86 - 0 at home against Gosforth Match report thanks to John Dean-Laws
Northern U17s were reminded of the great history between each clubs over the years - Northern v Gosforth. Northern didn't disappoint and with a lightening start Northern's Alex Hale scored in 3 minutes. Scrum half Robbie dived over soon after. Scores came thick and fast after this with Tom Crosse, a fine French import, going over and a couple of conversion. Matty Gordon also scored a brace against his old club. Not to be over shadowed Adam Mohamed crashed over and Jamie Balmier scored his first try of 4 before half time. First game back for Jamie after Falcons duty and he didn't disappoint.
Half time 60-0. Northern made all 7 changes at half time to give all squad a game and the performance didn't dip. Josh came on to score within 2 minutes and made all his conversions. New winger Ose starting to find form with a well finished team try. Last scores were by Jack Tait after an 80 yard burst, then team captain Nick White completed a fantastic squad performance with the last try.
